David Bowie Memorial

David Bowie, commonly known as Ziggy Stardust, was born at 40 Stansfield Road in Brixton on January 8, 1947, and passed away on January 10, 2016. Many see him as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, as he was a key role in the music industry.
His mother worked as an usherette at the local movie theatre (now the O2 Academy Brixton). Until 1953, David Bowie lived in Brixton and attended Stockwell Primary School.

In Lambeth, especially in Brixton, he has always been a source of pride and a local hero. In September 2011, the Brixton Pound local currency issued a £10 note featuring local hero David Bowie.
David Bowie was immortalised in a mural on Morley’s department store’s Tunstall Road wall. The mural, which was inspired by the album cover of the 1973 famous record Aladdin Sane, was painted in June 2013 by James Cochran an Australian artist.
Fans have gathered at the mural to pay their respects.
