Monument of a Golem

The construction of this sculpture is very unusual. It looks like a group of people in a metal band standing side by side, or someone walking, moving or “echoing” in an expressive way. The result has a very interesting visual effect. In 2019, the monument fell, it’s believed that it was caused by a rush of air. However, after the renovation, it has returned to its original location.

Some may wonder why Poznań has a Golem monument. The answer may come as a surprise, since it all started with the legend of Prague’s Golem (the Voice Man), who was supposed to protect Prague’s Jews from persecution. According to legend, their creator was Rabbi Yehuda Loben Bekalej, the character who united Poznań with the Czech Republic’s figurehead. According to Becalej, he is said to have been born in Poznan.
