The Freedom Square

Freedom Square is one of the most tough Poznań places. From an architectural perspective, Freedom Square is a completely unique aggregate of lovable antique historic homes and communist blocks.
Historically a symbol of oppression and loss, today it is the centre of Poznań and Poland. This place represents Poland’s struggle for national freedom, dignity and long history.

However, as is often the case in history, this was not always the case. As we learned earlier, the square was the first square built to demonstrate Prussian power on this very historic land. Built by David Gilly on the outskirts of the historic city centre of Poznań. This square is said to be the site of a parade to mark the Prussian dynasty’s right to Posen. It also faces the Old Market Square, a relic of Poland’s past. These attempts to demonstrate German hegemony later proved to be highly provocative.
But German rule didn’t last forever. It ended in 1918 when Poland regained independence. And the role of this square has changed immediately. It became the heart of Poznań back then. Also, plac Wolności acquired its modern name at this time. There were several options – 3d May Square (Constitution Day) or 11th November day (Poland Independence Day), but Poznań people decided to stick to the very first name.
During the communist era, this square changed its name back to Freedom. But this was freedom of occupation, which was wrong. But today, Liberty Square is experiencing its renaissance! Over the past decade, the square’s architecture has been renovated. It is now the site of various public gatherings, protests and festivals. The most livable place in the whole city of Poznan.
However, it is highly recommended to see not only Liberty Square but also its surroundings. The stunning Raczyński Library is a must-see, especially the Poznan National Museum! Don’t forget to take beautiful pictures of Hotel Bazaar, Hotel Rzymski, House of Brandt and Trade House. And of course, don’t forget to have a delicious coffee with a delicious croissant in the Arcadia building
